Regensburg

Germany, 18. August 2017
Regensburg stone bridge built in post-Roman times. Built between 1135 and 1146 length 350 metres and fortifications of three towers.
Wolfgang & Claudia Hendrich drove us to Regensburg. We parked outside of the old city. Its urban structures reflect 2000 years of architecture and contain Roman, Romanesque and Gothic elements. The architecture recalls the 11th-13th century when it was the centre of the Holy Roman Empire. It was the first Bavarian capital.

We crossed the bridge built in 1135 into the cobbled stoned town. We stopped at CremaGelato Alfresco for iced coffee.

We did a walking tour of Regensburg, an hour for 8 Euros. Very good. We then looked at the Wasserturm Museum, free entry.

The medieval Old Town of Regensburg was nearly completely exempted from the destructions of WWII, making it the only large medieval city in Germany to be preserved. It is one of the first cities in Europe to erect a stone bridge in post-Roman times. Built between 1135 and 1146 length 350 metres and fortifications of three towers. Regensburg is on the River Danube. You can take a boat trip to Walhalla and through the gorge to Weltenberg Monastery and experience a "strudel" (whirling currents in the river).

Next to Spitalgarten for beer o'clock and late lunch. They have their own brewery (Brauerei). We drank their draught beer.

We visited St Peter's Cathedral which is a gothic church famous for its medieval stained glass windows. It contains nearly 100 images of St Peter. More than any other figure of the age of Christianity St Peter symbolises the power and the powerlessness of a Christian existence.

The cathedral has a statue of the joyful angel Gabriel, named the Smiling Angel, on the wall symbolising the Christian faith.

We had a gelato on the way back to the car.

On the way to Henfenfeld a storm came through and it hailed leaving ice on the road side and fog over the fields.

In Henfenfeld we looked at the Fleismann Model Train Village built by Wolfgang and Marco. It had expanded even more from 2 years ago.
