A beautiful day today in Henfenfeld, Walhalla and Regensburg. 30 degrees and sunny with a slight cool breeze.
We drove 90 km to Walhalla. It is situated high above the Danube near Regensburg. It is a neoclassical building in the form of a temple surrounded by a portico with columns. It is a German National monument of the 19th century, created by the order of the Bavarian King Ludwig I (1825-1848). In the wake of the defeat by the Napoleonic armies, Prince Ludwig decided he would build a place of remembrance for outstanding German achievements as an inspiration. This German pantheon was called Walhalla after the warrior's paradise of Germanic mythology, Valhalla. The foundation stone was laid in 1830 and opened 12 years later. Klenze's design was inspired by the famous Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens 5BC. Along the walls of the interior are the busts and memorial plaques of the Walhalla comrades chosen by Ludwig I, a selection of 96 rulers, generals, scientists and artists considered exemplary in the 19th century. New busts have been added since 1962 at intervals of 5-7 years.
Then 10 km to Regensburg. A beautiful old world city.
