This is when it got REALLY swelly. About 25 years ago, we came to Ballycotton for a few years with the Harwich Runners (probably the best little running club in the world!).
Ballycotton hosted a very successful 10 mile race every year, sponsored by Nike. In fact, it became so popular it stopped being held because of organisational and health and safety reasons.
Ever since we’ve been planning to come along this coast, Kevin has wanted to land at Ballycotton, and revisit the pubs where the pre race ‘preparation’, aka drinking and singing, took place.
Sadly, it was not to be. We picked up a mooring buoy in a lovely bay, with beautiful azure seas, but couldn’t stand the Atlantic swell coming in (the pilot books had warned us), and decided to head off immediately.
Ballycotton Island with it’s distinctive black lighthouse, one of only three in the world. It was painted black in 1902 to distinguish it from the tower on Capel Island.
The closest we got to the harbour.
Can’t find the group photo of the runners in their kit from many years ago, but here they are in 2019.
