Day 2. A 20km walk today.
After Najera we headed toward Azofra for 13km. It was a reasonably flat walk through fields. A pleasant day of about 22 Celsius and a slight cool breeze.
At Azofra we stopped for drinks and ice cream and nectarines.
Next stop was near Alesanco at the Pilgrim cross called a Rollo.
We continued for 10km up a steep hill to a Pilgrims rest spot at the top of the hill before Ciruena. We stopped for a drink and rest. There was a local selling jewellery and refreshments. I bought a shell bracelet and key ring. He asked for a donation. I gave him 4 Euros. We walked through Ciruena.
We continued for 8km to our final destination for today, Santo Domingo de la Calzada. We arrived about 2:30pm.
We settled into the Hotel Corregidor. A lovely hotel. Had a shower and a rest then off to explore the old township. We visited the Albergue de Peregrinos from 1610 and walked along the main pilgrim street to the Cathedral. We paid 3 Euro each to enter. A magnificent church and museum display of arts and artefacts.
We walked the local bars and bought Tapas and beer until the bars and restaurants started to serve dinner menus. I bought a chicken shaped jam pastry from a patisserie. We had beer and Seafood Paella for dinner at Bar Espolon at 7:30pm. Then pastries from Pasteleria isasi Cassa Carro for Afters. Back to our hotel for the night.
Our overnight stay in Hotel El Corregidor was clean, excellent facilities and friendly staff.
Legend of the Chicken
In the cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada there is the Gothic chicken coop of polychrome stone, built in the mid-fifteenth century and which houses a living rooster and a hen in commemoration of the miracle of the hanged pilgrim who came back to life, one of the most widespread Jacobean legends throughout the Middle Ages.
History
Santo Domingo de la Calzada has always been linked to The Pilgrimage of St James. Its founder, Domingo Garcia, born 1019 in Burgos, devoted his life to God. He lived in the forest and helped pilgrims. He built a bridge over the Oja River, a pilgrim Hospital, roads communicating Najera and Redecilla del Camino and a church. He died 1109.
