Navarrete

Spain, 31. August 2017
Typical stall with items for Camino pilgrims.
From Logrono we walked 13km to the next town, Navarrete. This town is also famous for its rose La Rioja wine and there are nine bodegas where you can taste them. We did not stop for tastings. The ground we walked on is a dark red-colored clay. This clay is used by the many pottery workshops in the town.

The Navarrete church, Iglesia de la Asuncion is a baroque church with a statue of St. James near the top of the altar. This church is very plain on the outside but magnificent inside. We made a 1Euro donation and the gold alter and statue of St James lit up.

The parish church of Navarrete is a Renaissance building of considerable magnitude, whose construction lasted for nearly a century, between 1553 and 1645. The main attraction of the temple is its altarpiece, made by Fernando de la Peña between 1694 and 1698 and renovated by José de San Juan y Martín in 1713.

We ate lunch at the cafe next to the church. All of the towns along the Camino serve cost effective Perregrino meals, have water fountains for drinking water, nice places to sit and rest and toilet facilities.
