Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen. Characterized by winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches, including Kotor Cathedral.
We walked off the ship at 8:30am into the old city of Kotor, Montenegro. We walked through the narrow lanes toward the small St Luke's church (1195) and then the church of St Nicholas (1909). Next we climbed the old city wall up to the Fort (14th century). Entrance was 3 Euro each. The fort protected the fleeing villages if the town was over run. On the way down we climbed out a wall window and walked across the mountain to the fort village with house and church ruins. Then down the zig zag footway.
At the bottom we found a local bakery, Pekara AS,and bought drinks and savoury and sweet pastries for 5 Euros.
Walked back into the old city tourist area and had coffee at The Square Pub Restaurant in the St Triphon's Cathedral (1166) Square. Paid 2.50 Euro each to enter the cathedral. Fabulous inside. Ornate interior and upstairs a museum with religious antiquities such as silver ornaments, paintings, clothing and relics containing bones.
We continued walking through the old city and came across Claus and Annette at Luna Rossa Restaurant. We stopped and had a Niksicko beer with them. Then off to explore the medieval wall on the other side of the city. We were able to walk on the wall up to the mountain cliff. We bought gelato for 1 Euro scoop. I tried the goats milk gelato with raspberry ripple. It was very nice. Tasted much the same as it was sweet.
We then walked along the esplanade out of the city along the boat Marina. This section of the city is still being redeveloped. We stopped at the supermarket and bought Fanta orange for 90cents! Back to the wharf to sit on the benches and use the free wifi.
