Korcula, Croatia
It's 26 sea miles from Ploce to Korcula. We arrived at 5pm. We used our tender boats to get to the island port.
The island is 270 square km, 48 km long and 6km wide with 17,000 inhabitants. Vela Luka is the largest town with 5000 inhabitants.
According to legend, the island was founded by Trojan hero Antenor in the 12th century BC who is also famed as the founder of the city of Padua.
The island was first settled by Mesolithic and Neolithic peoples. There is archaeological evidence at the sites of Vela Spila (Big Cave) and at Jakas Cave near the village of Zrnovo. The findings at Vela Spila are on display at the Center for Culture in Vela Luka. The fate of these peoples is not known but the sites do provide a window into their way of life.
We walked into the old city. Firstly through the city defences. Originally from 1449 these defences would have been even more foreboding, forming a complete stone barrier against invaders that consisted of 12 towers and 20m-high walls. Dominating the little square at Korčula is the magnificent 15th-century St Mark's Cathedral, built from Korčula limestone in a Gothic-Renaissance style.
Ate dinner with Claus and Annette and Edith (cruise repeater) at Chakula Restaurant. The most amazing taste sensation homemade macaroni with local fish Monk fish. Each macaroni noodle was individually hand rolled. Dessert was a sensational slice 70% chocolate with figs, pomegranate and walnuts (no flour).
We took the tender back to the ship at 10pm. Claus and Annette went back to their cabin and we went onto the Lido deck to watch our departure while having drinks with Peter and Marlies.
