Sue organised a refreshing 6 mile walk today with the Chiltern Society through Beechwood Forests, over undulating chalk plains, farmlands and through vineyards.
The route started in the car park of the Three Horseshoes Pub on Wycombe Road in Marlow in Buckinghamshire and followed the River Thames before heading into the Chiltern Hills.
The Chiltern Hills form a chalk escarpment in South East England. They are known locally as "the Chilterns".
We walked through the small Harrow and Hope family vineyard. They make sparkling wine to rival the best in the world. In 2008, Henry and Kaye Laithwaite headed off to rural France to set up their first vineyard project at Chateau Verniotte in Castillon, Bordeaux. Now they make their award winning sparkling wines in Marlow which has the perfect conditions for their grapes. It was harvest time so we couldn't tour their winery but we stopped at Rebellion Brewery which also sell their wines.
The Rebellion Brewery had 4 beers on tap which we could pour and taste ourselves, drinking up to 2 litres per person. Very generous! The ones on tap today were IPA, Engineer, Smuggler and Red. The brewery started in 1987 with the closure of the Marlow based Thomas Wethered Brewery. The tasting room was magnificent full of wonderful local produce.
Back to the Three Horseshoes for lunch. A lovely traditional country style pub, serving locally sourced food and cask ales, refreshing beers, wines and fresh coffees.
Sue then dropped us off at the Maiden Head railway station. Sad to say goodbye. We had such a great time.
We went to London-Paddington and took the bus to London-Stansted and the shuttle bus to the Holiday Inn Express. We have to catch an early flight tomorrow to Bremen.
