Spent a weekend in Phichit, Thailand visiting a friend from high school that I haven't seen or spoken to in probably 9 years. Thank you Facebook for setting that one up! Phichit is about halfway between Chiang Mai and Bangkok and there are absolutely no tourists on that area. The only white people are the English teachers at the local schools. It's a pretty big city though - in Andrew's school alone there were 2,000 kids and there's multiple schools in the area.
On top of teaching elementary school, Andrew gives English lessons to few people in town who were really excited to practice their English with another native speaker, so we had most of our meals with locals, which was a really neat way to get to know the people. Everyone was SO nice and they all loved Andrew. It was a very different feel from the tourist cities!
One of Andrew's Thai friends drove us out to a temple about an hour outside of the city and it was crazy. Aside from the temple itself, there was all of these clay statues set up to illustrate Buddhist sayings and stories. The "hell" was the craziest - so graphic and vile!
