/ Sri Lanka 2024 - finally here!
Friday 9th February
Slow start today, had breakfast in our hotel which was actually ok. Walked into town and was accosted by a monk in our walk in. Basically he grabbed hold of me and kissed me on the cheek but also gave me a Hannibal Lecter style sniff, I thought he was going to suck my face off. Once J and I got over the shock we continued on our way. We walked via the lake and decided to go to the Tooth Relic Temple. It’s a series of temples allegedly housing one of the Buddha’s teeth which over the centuries has passed back and forth between India and Sri Lanka. You don’t actually see the tooth but you see the shine that it’s entombed in (which is massive) and at various times of the day the monks perform various ceremonies. I was keeping a close eye out for our earlier monk. We then went around the museum and finally outside into the grounds where amazing I bumped into Louise who is out here running a yoga retreat about 30 mins outside of Kandy. It was lovely to see her plus some of the other ladies from my Horsham days and the previous retreat; Lisa, Emma and Carwen. So lovely to see everyone. Stayed and chatted for a while and then we said our goodbyes. Next stop into Kandy town and James had found the details of a highly recommended Sri Lankan restaurant, Mandiya. It was a real back street affair with just a few tables. However the rice and fish curry was superb. After that we decided to have a spa treatment, me reflexology and J a head, neck and shoulder massage. Very lovely and the princely sum of £6 each for 30 minutes. I staggered out of my treatment and needed to catch a tuktuk immediately back to our hotel. Fell asleep for several hours, J came back sometime in between. Spent the evening watching ‘Bad Surgeon’ on Netflix! Very chilling….
