More beautiful views on the way to Lauragh, with a little detour near Ardgroom….Considering the rivalry between West Cork and Kerry, we were surprised Regina and Eileen took us across the border, but of course Kerry wasn’t as beautiful!
….and onto Helen’s Bar at Tuosist. Made famous for having the cheapest beer in Ireland last year, it’s the most people and cars we’ve seen all day.
Kilmakilloge Harbour.
Bunaw Pier.
Regina drove us back across the 12km Healy Pass. Straddling the Cork and Kerry border from Lauragh to Adrigole Bridges, its highest point is 334 metres.
Healy Pass waterfalls….
…and tunnel.
Glanmore Lake.
The pass was created in 1847 as one of the famine relief projects. A much needed short cut, but as the road is so isolated and high, the conditions for the starving, cold workers must have been dreadful and it’s not hard to imagine people dying at the side of the road.
The ancient track was originally called Bealach Scairt (the way of the caves), then the Kerry Pass, and in 1931 it was renamed The Tim Healy Pass after the first Governor General of Ireland.
At the top of the pass where Cork and Kerry meet, funeral processions stopped and pushed the coffin over the border to the awaiting people there. This spot was called The Flat Rock.
Regina and Eileen commented about waterfalls reappearing after the recent heavy rain, but we were so pleased to have blue skies today. A great day and a fantastic journey through a beautiful area.
