Glandore

Ireland, 17. June 2023
A calm night and morning, we took the dinghy into Union Hall. Having not used the engine for a while, it was reluctant to get going.
The quay at Union Hall has been extended (presumably for the rowing boats), and is now accessible at all states of the tide - the extension even has carpet!
A road bridge shortens the creek, which is decorated with beautiful hanging baskets.
A heron enjoying the mud.
Walking the road to Glandore we spied Avalon at her anchorage.
In Irish mythology Cliona is a beautiful goddess who had 3 brightly coloured birds that could lull humans to healing sleep by their singing. Her domain was Tir Tairngire - The Land of Promise. She was drowned in Glandore harbour by a great wave. Cliona’s Wave is one of the magical waves of Ireland.
The stone tunnel entrance to Christ Church, Kilfaughnabeg - the little church of Fachtna was consecrated in 1861.
Looking back on Christ Church from Glandore village.
Avalon is anchored in the distance.
Glandore Harbour with Adam and Eve rocks in the distance, and the green navigation markers showing the route in.
A great spot for a very good pint of Guinness. We thought Glandore pleasant, but geared to tourists, with coach trips, motorhomes and lots of soft top, two seater cars driving the Wild Atlantic Way!
Glandore was a trading port throughout the 1800s exporting minerals, ores and fish. A fish processing plant was on the pier. However the fishing industry declined during the First World War. Many of the local fishing boats were sunk by U-boats as the Germans thought they were assisting the British.
The sun was hot as we returned to Union Hall and we were pleased to have a slight breeze. The road in Union Hall which shortens the creek creates a lagoon teeming with fish.
Union Hall lagoon. We strolled around this and visited a superb exhibition of Irish portrait painters.
Note the splash of red from the pot of flowers!
After provisioning at Centra supermarket, a sunny ride back on the dinghy.

Cooking on the back of the boat on a calm, sunny evening….
….and a delicious meal.
The local lifeboat on manoeuvres.
And a lovely end to the day.
