Croatia, Split

, 16. October 2017
We arrived in Split, Croatia at 9am. We travelled 197 sea miles overnight from Kotor.

Split, a town on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, is known for its beaches and the fortresslike complex at its center, Diocletian's Palace, erected by the Roman emperor in the 4th century. Once home to thousands, its sprawling remains include more than 200 buildings. Within its white stone walls and under its courtyards are a cathedral and numerous shops, bars, cafes, hotels and houses.

We walked off the ship into the old city and joined Split Walking Tour with guide Luka Radnic, for 2 hours around the Palace and Old City (22 Euro each). We discovered that the city was made up of a Roman Palace redeveloped many times with different architectural styles. All styles are still visible as people have always lived here since Roman times. We saw the Temple of Jupiter, the Cathedral (Roman Mausoleum), City Museum, Cellars of the Diocletian's Palace (the dungeon of the dragons in Game of Thrones), stores with 1700 year old Roman marble floors and a bank with internal Roman pillars on the original gutters. We peeked in at Nadalena, the chocolate shop that entered the Guinness Book of Records in 2016 for making the largest chocolate egg in the world.

We stopped in Narodni trt - Pjaca, the People's Square at Palaca Judita for coffee. Ron had Americano 16 Kuna, Susie had Machiatto large 12 Kuna.

We walked laneways not yet covered and bought pastries from Bobis Bakery, Soparnik 11 Kuna (cheese scroll), Mali Burek Spinat 8 Kuna (spinach slice), Dom Savijaca Visnj (berry slice) 10 Kuna.

We tried the only local beer, Ozujsko Pivo 1892, from Caffe Bar Vivas Bar, 32 Kuna for 2.

We walked for 2 hours along the esplanade and up the stairs to the Park Suma Marjan and Croatian Archeological Monuments and Holy Cross Chapel. We walked around to Crkvica Betlehem point lookout.
