( Overview
/ Europe 2017
We sailed overnight from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Falmouth, a distance of 173 sea miles.
Falmouth is the third largest natural harbour in the world. The largest is Sydney Harbour. Sir John Killigrew founded the city of Falmouth in 1613. During WWII in 1942 it was the destination for German Commando Troups on the Submarine Stützpunkt.
We walked into Falmouth rather than taking the shuttle bus. We walked around Falmouth and through to the yacht marina. Back to the centre for shopping in the Mountain Warehouse store. We bought Cornish pasties and ate them on the pier. Dropped off our shopping at the ship and walked the coastal walk around Pendennis and the gold path to the castle. Continued our walk along the coast past Castle, Tunnel, Gyllyngvase and Swanpool Beaches. Then overland back to the Prince of Wales pier for Devon Cream Tea. We saw a motorbike parade for the Mayor's Charity Parade. Next to the Grape Ale House for an Irish 13 Hops Beer and for Ron a Cornish Knocker Golden Pale Ale. On the way back to the ship we had chips from Rick Stein's Restaurant for £3.
A pleasant 16km walk today.
Pendennis Castle is a combination of Forts in the county of Cornwall. Together with its sister fort St Mawes Castle, King Henry VIII commissioned their construction as defences against the French and Spanish between 1539 and 1545.
